Hilux Bashing
Not a shred of overland tech this, but did anyone watch Top Gear the other night and the attempted murder of a £1000 farm Hilux?
It made me laugh.

I am a self confessed Series 2 Landy nut, but hats off to the hilux. It took a lot of stick and still ran.
I am well aware of the failings of Land Rover products, and have read your book, Cjhris, but in there defence, I must mention two of my vehicle. I had a very serious accident in my 1970 88" on the 5th april 2003, when the brakes failed on a car trailer I was towing. We jack-knifed and the landy spun sideways, my partner Louise and I were thrown out. Only the pasenger door on the 88" was undamaged. The rear crossmember was bent up at both ends and the dumb-irons were both bent. The 88" was recoved to a local Garage and sat there for 8 weeks whilst I was in Hospital. Eventually I bought her back from the insurance and sent a friend to pick her up with a trailer. As the trailer only had a hand winch, he thorght he would try his luck and see if the starter would drive the landy onto the trailer. She start first time and would have got me to safety. The 88" will be soon back on the road after her rebuild. This has only been slowed by my injuries.
My 1968 109" was stood for 5 year and then bunt out by vandles. All the glass shatered and West Yorks fire brigade filled her up with water. Again stood for several weeks before we rescued her from the scrap yard. we cleaned her up, filled her up with fuel and towed her down the street and she fired up nearly staight away. A new crossmember and one other patch and she is through her test. She is not quite fit for the desert, yet, but give me a few more weeks.
Cheers Mick The simpler, the better!

simpler the better I agree. I did not want to start up the nth LT v LC debate - that was the other guy!
I suspect a lot of 4x4s could have hacked the Top Gear bashing - there is nothing in tlcs that makes them burn or drown less badly than any other car - but it ws fun to watch!

Well what can you say, companies would pay millions for advertising like that, and they had the top car show on TV pull it off for free.
In OZ there have been Hilux ads for years using the breaker brothers, doing there best to destroy the things, they also had the "bugger" ad as well, I wont go into detail but it is one of the best adds going.
I missed last weeks show but managed to read about it, coupled with tonights feat, the hilux must just about have to go down in motoring history, imagine what they could have done to a HJ75.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
