Oil changes on the road?
Folks,
I would be very interested in what people do on longer trips with their sump oil and used filters... Just something I have been wondering about.

Unless you are unfortunate enough to be stuck in the middle of the bush I always try to coincide mine with stops in town and at a garage for "proper" waste disposal (which usually means recycling your old oils etc).

Recycling.... you mean use it again?
depending on which continent you are of course. And of course using your old oil to redo a bit of sandroad never hurts?! To keep the dust down... This is how "we" did it in the old days, I am told...
But yeah, we keep to DIY garages, mostly petrol stations, where I can work myself...

When you're in the need of an oil change, ask the locals where they do theirs

Oil changes
In just about every country in Africa you find filling stations with service bays. I just kept a supply of filters. You can go into any one of these and rent the service bay for an hour. The costs are usually about 5 to 10 Euro per hour and most of them through in a guy to help you for it (To do the dirty work). They all have disposal drums in the pit. Just a word of caution, NEVER get any of these guys in Africa to fit the oil filter or the sump plug (They will strip or cross thread at least one of them.) and put the new oil in yourself they normally lack the finesse in getting it right.
When the vehicle is standing on the pit it also gives one the chance grease all that should be greased, check brake pads and give the underside a good check out for anything that might cause a problem later on.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
