Spare Turbo or Fuel Injection Pump?
A dilemma:
I have replaced my 200 TDI Defender Turbo and Fuel Injection Pump (with 'high' quality 'new' Garrett and Bosch units).
I'm about to set off on a long trip through Africa & Asia etc.
I have the old Turbo and Fuel Injection pumps which work fine. I could replace a Turbo on my own, but not the Fuel Injection Pump if stuck in the middle of nowhere. Mechanics I trust say that the 200 tdi Turbo's don't break that often, or at least go slowly.
So do I take either of them as spares, or save the space and weight and flog them on ebay?

I have had a few experiences with failing FIP pumps over the years in Africa (mostly Toyota) and when they go it is a gradual decline... usually signalled by difficult starting when hot and tolerances are looser. Not something that will leave you stranded somewhere IMO. The turbo also would usually be a fairly gradual failure unless a turbine wheel was to disintegrate. I drove my Defender with various dodgy turbos (all "like new" as described by a spare parts dealer in Ghana) and while on the way out again it is not something that would be a trip stopper. There are numerous 200 and 300Tdis running around here with bodged manifolds where the turbo has been removed - no rocket sleds thats for sure! So if it was me I would be sticking both on ebay.

Keep them but leave at home.
Unless you really need the cash then I would hold onto them as useful spares instead of selling them. I'm a bit of a hoarder mind you.
I don't think you'll need them on your trip as you mentioned but why not leave them with a friend when you're away so that in the unlikely event of needing one they can have the part couriered out to you. A lot cheaper than having to find a dealer to courier out a brand new unit to you. Also should you need one having a used unit sent out would yould leave you less prone to having to pay import duty.
