Technical Discussion
A while ago there was a discussion about 'Technicals' following the events down at 8 Bells in the Gilf Kebir, so I thought that I would post up this photo of a customised Toyota LC.
I'm out in Darfur at present working, and I happened to have the opportunity to get a snap of the official military's wheels. The militia have similar cars, but they cut the tops off much more roughly - sharp bent metal everywhere - especially when converting ex UN / NGO LC78 hard-tops... (you can identify them from the TJM BullBars still fitted!)
For those who still believe in the superiority of Toyotas I learned this - apparently the LandRover Defenders are no good for gun platforms - the coil springs mean they fall over when the big machine gun is fired off to the side, and the 80s and 105s are no good because when they cut the roof off the car breaks apart too quickly... - so the carjacked UN 105s get sold to Chad for 8,000 USD each, and the Landys are used a fast-pursuit cars (Yep, even I was surprised, but apparently they are faster out in the desert here than the 78s!)
