TLC 78 <> 105 <> new models
Hi,
I am in doubt as to what to choose for myself and wife + daughter for living in Dakar / Senegal, with, needless to say, regular Sahara - trips already in my mind.
The advantage of a current 78 : roomier, proven
The advantage of a current 105 : 5 doors so easier access for the family
From production January 2007 however these models are going to disappear (arriving on the market in March 2007).
The "new" 78 is going to be 8 cm larger, so roomier again, the 105 is not going to be produced anymore and the new model code 76 will be a 78 with 4 doors.
As things currently stand I would prefer to get a new 105 (easier in daily use and my wife doesn't like the 78 anymore after having driven them for years). I am a bit afraid as to infancy diseases in any new model although, of course, the Toyota quality build should avoid these, but then again. I presume that when I will be selling the car in 6 years time the resale value of a newer model will be higher as to an older model.
Any thoughts ?

Gosh - interesting stuff! I think they're making a mistake getting rid of the 105 (but that's just my humble opinion).
I'm intrigued that you say the 4 door 78 is going to be called the 76. There has, for some time, been an HZJ76 made for the Japanese (and other Eastern) market(s). This is a 4 door station wagon with a 78 front end, but it's quite a bit shorter than the Troopie (78) and the body doesn't 'flare out' behind the driver doors like the 78 does. I wonder if this is the 76 you mean, or where there is a new one - Landcruiser model numbers are always baffling?
If it is the 76 I'm thinking of, it should be a pretty decent car. I used to have the predecessor of the 76, called the HZJ77 - it was quite a nice car - 1HZ engine, 24 volt electrics and fairly well trimmed - including an engine driven winch as standard. Only real problems with it were a) the body was a bit too small (for carrying stuff) and b) it had leaf springs all round, so drove like a boat. I think the 76 has springs at the front, so the latter wouldn't be an issue.
Anyway, good luck with whatever you get - you couldn't really go far wrong with either huh?!
