Alps Tour
Hi all,

I am looking for some info for a planned trip next year.
I'm looking at renting a bike in Hamburg, taking in the Brno motogp and heading south to the Alps.

The trip will be 5 weeks in total.
I'm planning on around 250-300km per day max and have roughly planned out my route.
But my biggest concerns are:

1 - Should i book accom beforehand? I prefer to wing it and just find somewhere on a day to day basis as i need it. But it will be in August and will it be too busy to do that?

2 - What should I plan as my per diem? Including average 2-3* accom, food, fuel and a couple of s a day?


Any advice is much appreciated.

1 - You will be okay to wing it in general but you will struggle to get rooms in busy areas ie around the MotoGP, tourist towns/cities and the coast. Having said that you shouldn’t have to travel too far from a busy area to find a room - look at booking.com (or similar) around 3pm and you will find a room.
2 - Budget will depend on where you are. Rooms near MotoGP will be expensive, Switzerland is more expensive than France or Italy.
In general in Europe lunch is the best value for money meal of the day in restaurants. You can get a 3 course lunch with wine for €10-15 if you Know where to look, then all you will need is a and snack in the evening.

We usually camp and cook our own meals. Our budget is around €50-100 per day depending on how far we travel.

As always it really depends on how much you want to spend.

Any particular reason to rent in Hamburg? Hamburg to Brno is a miserable, boring ride. The North of Germany is not particularly good riding country, it doesn't really get good until the Sachsen Alps south of Dresden. I'd fly or take the train much further south and rent from there - maybe even Munich.

In Brno for the dates of the Moto GP, certainly worthwhile. Otherwise - depends on your preferences. Not mandatory, anyway.

The answer is always a hundred euros per day. You think you might get away with less, but it always averages out to a hundred euros per day.

There's a web site on hotels especially for motorcyclists: https://www.motorradhotels.de/
Unfortunately it seems to be in German only although it is for hotels/B&B's all over Europe. But they offer an APP which gives you all necessary details on the accommodations to install on your cell.


Re AnTyx: In northern Germany it depends on where you're travelling. The Harz mountains and southwards is quite scenic country. Besides that there are several quaint old towns along the way south. Of course using the autobahn is boring - but that applies to most motorways.... Travel the country roads ;o)
