Border Crossing Bosnia to Montenegro
Does anyone know if the Border Crossing from Bosnia to Montenegro near Hum is good to use? Its a bridge over the River Tara and takes you straight into the Piva Canyon and on to the Durmitor National Park.

If not, has anyone got a good crossing point.

I've used that crossing, the road to the crossing (Bosnia side) is a bit tight and on coming cars just appear from nowhere so take it easy, the border guards were a bit arsey on both sides but probably just having a bad day

I have used that crossing a number of times and like Dave says, it is a small road, but can be rather busy with local traffic. The border guards have always been very correct and courteous when I was there.

On the Montenegro side there are a number of options for roads to take. You can follow the main road, which follows Piva canyon (not Tara canyon) for a while and then turn east into Durmitor NP via Trsa. Beautiful road.

If you want to follow the Tara river you'll have to take the small road that starts in the no-man's land between the 2 border posts. It is in the hair pin just across the bridge on the MNE side. You'll have to pass via the MNE border guards first and then ask permission to take the road. They'll let you make a u-turn.
From there you can follow the Tara river for a while and then turn South to end up in Trsa as well. Or you can follow the road a bit further and ride through Durmitor to Zabljak via Susicko lake. You'll see a whole different side of the Durmitor mountains. A small section of that road is still gravel.

You really can't go wrong with any of these options, they all offer great riding and awesome views.

There's also a number of nice camp sites, both on the BIH and the MNE side.

Border crossing is simple, little narrow, and the rest is fine, enjoy the ride, and take at least option no 2 that duibhcek wrote, third one is my favourite.

Two months ago the road - or maybe track is a better description - on the Bosnian side was narrow and rough and they were working on it. Need a bit of care on a bike as the local drivers don't bother slowing down.

We camped at the new (but now half demolished) border post on the Montenegro side ovelooking the deep valley and there was no traffic at all during the night so I suspect the crossing is closed at night.

There was no insurance on either side at this crossing three days ago. The Bosnian border guys mad me pay them a bribe to get in the country since there was no where to buy insurance.


The road on the Bosnian side is about 65% paved with lots of unmarked obstacles, loose gravel and a few cops checking for speeding right as the road starts to improve.
