I'm currently doing the impossible trip ýndia-netherlands on a india 350cc enfield without carnet. Yes guys with cash dollars it's possible!!

Okey here's the question. I'm in alanya on the way to fetihe and having a not so very nice sound in my engine. Sounds like a sort of rattle what you can here if the engine is cold and you kick the kickstarter. You can hear the sound pretty good when the engine is cold. power is okey, no problems, no excessive oil consumption. The sound dýsapears when engine is hot

Does anybody know a enfield mechanic near fetihe or in other parts of turkey on the way to greece??

any info is more than welcome

I don't know much about enfields, but it sounds as it perhaps could be a worn out cam chain or cam chain tensioner.

Dont know the bike but it could well be tappets (valve adjustment) as the engine warms up the noise will lesson as the heat expands the gap. Dont worry too much unless the noise is still there when the engine is fully warm, then you should adjust them. If you can remove the top covers you should be able to see the valves going up and down, gently place your thumb on the rocker and if the noise goes away thats your loose tappet. Better still use a gauge!

Problem is not tappets or rockers, probably big end bearing or somesort of bigger problem

Hello Bart.
Could it be a worn/damaged piston slapping the cylinder wall? Perhaps the piston skirt is broken off? The clearance will decrease when engine heats up, hence noise will decrease too. I had bad main bearings on my SR500 (the ballcages disintegrated). It gives a rumbling noise. Remove the sidecovers of the engine to gain access to the crankshaft and try to "lift" the crankshaft. There should be a small clearance, and the shaft should rotate freely without binding when turning the shaft
forwards/backwards a few degrees. You will feel it if the clearance is too great.

Hi, well definatly not the cam cahin as your Enfield doesn't have one, most likely Piston slap, very common on Enfields, especially "Indian" market models as these are not as well made as the export ones. If it is piston slap I wouldn't worry about it. If it is the big end, will "knock" under load and vibration will be apparent, that will be more vibration than usual, after riding from India I guess you know what the normal vibs are like. The knock will get worse and will not dissapear once the engine is warm, in fact as the engine warms up and the oil "thins" out the noise might get louder. I have rebuilt lots of Enfields as I used to work for an Enfield dealer in the UK. Hope this helps
