Hi Landygirl71 and welcome,
I know it can be a pain for Brits to get coverage for non-EU Central European countries, I have been that way a couple of times and always got it on the border when entering each country that I need it.

Landygirl:
If your UK policy does not provide cover for Albania, you can purchase Albania-specific insurance at any major border crossing into Albania.
I did this in 2014 and 2016 when I toured there (I have a Canadian-plated bike, so for sure my home insurance does not cover Albania!), and it cost me €12.80 for 15 days of coverage.
The same holds true for the other Balkan countries - if your home insurance does not provide cover, you can buy country-specific insurance at major border crossings.
There are two other discussions here on the forum that I recommend you read to gain a better understanding of these insurance matters, they are:
Do I need Green Card Insurance
and
Balkans Insurance - Here's the story, with details & sample documents
Unfortunately the photos of the various insurance documents are missing from the latter thread (thanks, Photobucket...), but the written information should give you a pretty good idea of what your choices are when touring the former Yugoslavian countries and Albania.

But it's not a problem. Arrive at the border (or in the harbours) and buy it. Stop. : Thumbup1:

When I entered Albania from Greece early on a Sunday morning (ten years ago, so everything may be different now), there was no insurance available. They told me to buy at the next town, but of course I found reasons to not bother. Eventually I did make a genuine effort, but found insurance expensive and time-consuming to purchase.
I also found that many of the car drivers who were behaving so erratically all around me had no insurance (or license, or for that matter, driving skills). In the end, I just carried on without insurance. That's not recommended, of course, but things are not necessarily as simple as "it's not a problem."
Hope that's helpful.

Hi Mark:
I can appreciate that 10 years ago things were probably very unorganized.
I made my first trip to Albania 5 years ago, and returned 3 years ago and also last year.
The country is making incredible progress from where it used to be. It's not yet Switzerland, but it is far, far better than it was just 5 years ago.
