Help replacement licence plate, Germany

Stuck in Karlsruhe currently, my Licence place/registration plate came off my bike in high wind on the Autobahn..

Ive tried looking around Karlsruhe , I don't speak German but from what I have gathered its not in like in the Uk where shops are able to print off anything, it seems all the Licence plates come pre stamped with KA?

Does anyone have any idea of anywhere that might possibly able to supply an english style licence plate? I have a backup plan and my housemate is going to collect one tomorrow from my local motorcycle shop in the UK and express deliver it to Germany BUT thats going to put a 3 day halt on my tour and cost me hotel fees and express postage fees.

So does anyone have any idea at all?

All help would be greatly appreciated, Dan.

well... shit happened... but be a creative... and get on with it without loosing time...

just to let you know.. Germany closes down over the weekends... so you only got tomorrow morning (Saturday) !!!

now.. go to any paper shop (the one which sales pens and writing stuff) buy yourself some yellow sticky foil or any plastic that comes close to the lovely curry colour...
the same shop sales sticky labelling letters as well, the bigger the better... if you can't find such a shop on the high street... try the outskirts and find a equivalent to B&Q, called "Baumarkt", "Pracktika" or so...

you will have a hard time to find a plastic sheet like no-plate material you are used to in the UK... so alternatively, to all the foil stuff you may just buy a small tin yellow paint and a any plastic sheet or plywood instead and don't forget a pain brush the B&Q shops may sell this peel off no+letters in bigger sizes as well... if not... well be a sign writer than...

I don't think any German cop will stop you as long you got a reg plate of some kind.. if you get stooped... well explain the matter and be polite with them...

hope that helps...

And if you happen to come accross a "Zulassungsstelle", which is where you register all kinds of vehicles, there's plenty of shops that will print pretty much anything you need. Every city has one, just ask for "KFZ Zulassungsstelle". A German license place is worthless without the official seal on it, the one between the city part (KA for Karlsruhe) and the individual part of a license plate. If I remember correctly British license plates don't have that so you shouldn't get in trouble with the police. The downside is that as spooky has said Germany closes down over the weekend you won't be able to find anything before monday morning.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
