That's exactly the way I look at it.

And you get to spend your first night in somewhere you actually want to go to (I believe Heidelberg was mentioned) and not in a crap hotel on some industrial estate en route.

This is another reason to use the non peage routes through France, you not only get to see more, what you save on tolls will make the difference between camping and using B&B (Chambres d'Hotes). Although sometimes you can turn this around and camp on a peage 'Aire' (Lay bye) if you are discrete.

Well with only two weeks of travel time, sometimes it is best to slab it on the motorway to get to where the good riding is.

Step 1: get good maps! See 2nd thread discussing which maps to get.

Draw a line from Calais to Heidelberg and pick secondary roads along it.

Link those small stretches. You'll find the parts in between are just as good. There are very few boring sections in the Alps.

Look for sites with pics, find them on the map and generate your tour.

Better still, that link above also has FREE downloadable maps of motorcycle touring suggestions. Those maps are put out by the ADAC, the German auto club.

I'll be there all next June. See you on the road.

- If motorcyclists claim to be individuals, why then do so many of them ride in packs?

New to Horizons Unlimited?

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
