Southern France

I'm heading down to Toulon next week to catch the ferry to Corsica. I'll be hitting the motorway down to somewhere near Dijon on day one, but after that I have a few days to wend my way down to the coast.

My question is what would be a nice a nice non-motorway route from Dijon to Toulon that would take 2 days easy riding. I'm guessing that there must be some nice mountain roads around there.

Also, what would be a good place to stay?

Thanks all.

Stay off the wine roads south of Dijon at this time of year - unless you're into wine of course. Just busy busy. I tend to take the 996 south from Dijon to Bourg en Bresse. From there I'd suggest the 1075 to Grenoble.

After Grenoble take either the 1091 and N94 via Briancon to Gap or the N85 Route Napoleon. The first one is a more scenic ride (if the weather's good) but the second one is quicker. Or stick with the 1075 as it heads south to Sisteron but it's a bit of a windy road at times.

Between Gap and Sisteron there's a choice of either sticking with the N85 or the 1085 which parallel each other down the river valley. After Sisteron take the D4 down as far as the Verdon river. After that a combination of the D554 to Brignoles, the D43 and the A57 for the last few miles into Toulon will get you to the port.

My suggestion for an overnight stop would be somewhere in Gap, a provencal town I really like. I'll be down that way myself in early Aug.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
