transalpina romania
Just a heads up for anyone planning the transalpina in romania, the origional route while still open is on the southern side unsurfaced for lonnnnng stretches ok in the dry but i would not like to think i was on it in the rain on a big adventure tourer

I suggest you avoid the weekends over both Carpathian passes - Transalpina & Transfagarasan - because it's likely you will be taking part in nothing more than a frustrating, slow-motion procession of traffic; behind and in-between a continuous ribbon of cars, motorbikes, camper vans, pedal cycles etc.

Blame the former presenter of Top Gear, Jeremy Clarkson (remember him?) as he described the Transfagarasan in particular, as .. 'THE greatest driving experience'.

Go during the normal working weekdays is my recommendation.

I've ridden both the Transalpina and Transfagarasan a couple of times in the last Fortnight on my S1000XR. There are a couple of sections of unmade surface (without warning signs) but nothing to cause any concern to even a sports bike in the dry.

To be honest, in the wet, even the Tarmac is a bit dodgy!

Whilst the views are better on the Transfagarasan, which would be good for a telly programme, the actual riding on the Transalpina is much, much better. 1st, 2nd gear all the way up and lots of throttle - so much fun!

Just done both in last few days in my 4x4
I agree with Racheal I thought the Transalpina was actually far more fun to drive and much less hassle.

Random roadworks etc do appear but should not give you any real problems if you take your time. Cars overshooting corners is more of an issue so watch you lines on the bends.

Would avoid them on the weekend if possible as you will sit in traffic most of the way on the Transfagaran especially near the top. There was less traffic jams going on the Southward route on this stretch.

Stunning views on both routes plus a wonderful country to travel in.

Ha ha - so true! Watching a couple of the racer boys trying to drive up there was hilarious! I think I followed a Golf GTI up a few corners and he messed up every single one of them. I just rode past eventually to get out of the way…

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
