oil bath air filters

I used to have an oil bath air filter in my 608 Mercedes and I have been wondering about converting my Iveco 40-10 to use one.

What are the pros and cons? Will it work?

They are so simple and cost nothing to change the oil and wash. Has anyone here done it or know a reason not to?

IIRC they have to be reasonably well matched to the engine CFM requirements to work efficiently . The only cons why they went out of use is cost , and quicker to change filter cartridges. They were universally specified in military vehicles , when performance over cost was priority, also no need to carry any extra materials as when engine oil was changed the old oil could be used in the filter . I have one from an old landrover would that be a similar CFM?

That would be a 4 cylinder .. 2 litre motor IIRC.

If one was used on a bigger motor then sucking the oil through to the motor becomes a problem.

Another alternative are those 'cyclonic' filters ... I'd use those as a prefilter before a paper filter. Similar to the filtering of Dyson vacuum cleaners.

My engine is a 2.5 litre and I thought the land rover was a 2.2 is that close enough CFM?

the landrover was 2.286 , so running a 2.5 would in my opinion be in the envelope , its not that precise a requirement . HTSH

the later ones were 2.5 but cant remember if they used an oilbath for sure

The turbo diesel ones weren't but frequently turned into an oil bath, but thats an accident of crap design

The military version of the Iveco 4x4 (wm) has a oil bath air filter,perhaps someone knows where one is ?

or ask on the iveco 4x4 forum.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
