Question Electrical Questions XR650R

I am a self confessed electrical idiot. I have tried to understand it but still struggle. Could anyone help with these questions. I have a european XR650r. Does anyone know what the standard alternator outputs in volts. I want to run some dual star grip heaters that will draw max 50w. Can I do this with the headlight on(35w) or will I have probs. I know Ricky Stator in the usa sell upgraded stators, 200w in total. Would I need one of these. I also intend to run a GPS from a power source near the bars. Does a gps need much power to run. If I had the grips on, the GPS working and the lights on will it all go pear shaped. Any advice appreciated. Cheers

well the output in Volt's is a amazing 12Volts

what you wanted to know was the output in watts from the generator but alas with a quick look on the web I couldn't find out.

I wouldn't think you need 200W output that is serious power.

A GPS will use next to no power around 5W

looks like the xr just produces enough power for itself and nothing else!

cheers for the reply Brian. I told you I was a dick when it came to electrics, guess I also proved it with that post. You are right I did want to know what the output of the stator was in watts. I have looked at the workshop manual and other xr websites but have not found the answer. I am sure someone out there knows the answer. Please share it with me.

Hi kev. looks like I was posting as you were replying. yeah iceland was a blast had a great time. only prob was the time it took to get back and those three days the ferry company makes you spend in the farroes. as for doing some work you aint wrong, its all on for mongolia next year so its back into the gagage to rip the bikes apart and prep them. anyway cheers for the link and im sure i will catch you at a meet in the future.

Hi Oz - I've got the info somewhere at home (not there at the moment)... the US spec bike (presumably the one they tested on the ADV rider link) has much lower output than the EU and AUS versions - which have a 55/60w headlight, not the weedy 35w enduro style lamp...

If your heated grips need 50w more, then I would say you'll need to upgrade the stator - try Electrex World here in the UK which is where I got my 200w and corresponding Reg/Rec unit. Great customer service...

I converted my whole loom to run DC via the new reg/rec and a battery (for the e-start kit), far simpler than having the lights on AC and other things on DC (why Honda, why?!)

For info, the Ricky Stator '200w' ones are actually 2 x100w I believe, using one half circuit for headlights and the other for everything else... too much bother knowing which wire is which in my opinion... also I've heard that quality control can be a bit hit and miss with their products?

As you can see, the standard output is a pretty weedy 74w (the US bike even less!) and I was wrong about the Euro headlight - they all run 35w bulbs, just a single filament in the US bike...

As I mention above, the Electrex World 200w stator and corresponding reg/rec is what I use, and can recommend.

You can set it up either/or , i.e, 100+100 or 200. The 100+100 is used to isolate the critical mega front light used for desert racing.
