Sprengisandur Route opening

Hi all,

I've managed to persuaded my teenage sons to join me on a little trip around Iceland. No bike which is a shame because there are 3 of us, but we are renting an F road 4*4 and camping where ever possilbe because we haven't a lot of money and medical neeeds mean when we get to the end of the day, we have to stop!

We're planning to take the Sprengisandur route across the highlands with a few detours to see some sights and after reading the guidebook, I note it saying it opens from July. We are arriving 5th July. I'd rather not find that because of a long winter, it is closed.

Has anyone any experience? is the guide book right and am I likely to get a much better chance if I put the trip back one week?

Also, anything we really need to see on the way. We'll be taking our time.

Cheers for any advice

Dave

Hi Dave,

I think last year, when I was on Iceland, the F26 opened around the 28th June.
It's hard to Highlight single spots, the route and the landscape in generall is great. But for example the Waterfall Aldeyjarfoss at the northern end is very nice.

When I was on Iceland I checked the current road condition on:

Road conditions in the central highlands | Road conditions in the central highlands | The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration

Every few days some new roads were opened.

If you have more time in the Highlands i recommend to not only do the Sprengisandur, the F88 to Askia for example is also very nice. Depending on the weather the river crossings can be deep, so be careful. In the national parks you will sometimes meet rangers, ask them about the road conditions.

Regards

Manuel

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
