Smile klr 650 how many km are they good for

i was talking with a german guy who has a xt 600 and it has got 260,000 km on it ,he replaced the engine at 169,000 km,i have a 2000 klr with 47,000 miles(75,000 KM) on it now and it is running like a bird ,question is, if i continue to use this bike for my round the world trip how long will it last before major work is needed ,there have been a bunch of low mile motors going on ebay for a good price ,should i put a low mile motor one in mine now while it is in USA and keep this one as a spare (if needed ship it to wherever type thing ) or keep goind with this one and maybe get a spare motor here in USA and crate it up and sent it where ever ,has any one got any high mileage stories of klrs ,oh yeah ,do those bigger front brake rotor kits from ebc (i think) really work

Hi David!

I would say look at the condition of your counter balancer chain. If it look like new, just keep going.

My KLR never needed valves adjustment during my trip around the americas. It had 70 000km at the end of the trip and the balancer chain shows no signs of wear!!!

KLR endurance

I would be rather careful with the mileage of your KLR: I am hiring out KLR's for a while and found them to start burning oil from about 70000km. My bikes might have to endure a bit more than a standard privately owned one looking at some a***holes abusing the bikes every now and then but I would still consider to get the engine done (rebore to 1st OS / new piston & rings).
I would rather do my own engine than buying one 2nd hand.
Do the water pump shaft seal while doing the rebore and get the valves and seats remachined while things are accessible.
Check the balancer chain for wear.
The rest of the engine is bullet proof.

Don't freak too much about the engine packing up somewhere during the trip. You will always find a place to get it fixed. It is not that the network of Kawa dealerships ends at the borders of the US :-)

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
