Height Of Defender with Rack
Hi Guys,
I am about to reconstruct the 'thing' I call a garage,so will be putting in a new up n over door.
Can anyone help with the near enough height of a Defender with 50mm lift,and basket type(hannibal)roofrack fitted?
This will help me sizing the clear opening I need.
If any of you have direct experince of an up n over door that allows a rack and roof tent to go in I would be gratful for this height too.

Hi Tony
The 90 has a 1 inch lift and a Safety Devices rack with a Hannibal roof tent mounted at about the same height as a Hannibal rack - quite low - running currently on 265/75/16 s BFG Muds (31.9 in high) and its 7ft 4 unladen to the highest point on the roof tent.
So add another inch or 2 with a 2 inch lift - more if you are using 255/85/16 or other taller tyres.
Id make the garage/door as tall as you can - its nice to have some room to work on the rack/roof tent in the winter - your looking at an 8ft door I guess as a minimum.
watch out with the square Defender and up and over doors, as they need clearance to swing in - normally where your roof/tent will be unless your garage is extra long - much better to us a sectioned track and roller door if possible, though they are more expensive.
I can park our Disco so its spare tyre is 1 inch from the sectioned roller door and it will still clear the roof when raised - if I had an up and over I wouldnt be able to close it.

Hi,
Just been outside with my tape as I was just thinking about this as well.
My 110 is on 235/85 16s with the standard commercial rear springs (new) and heavy duty fronts for the winch which lift it at least 25-50mm and a old style galvanised box roof rack and that gives 2.25m at the rear and 2.35m at the front.
Luckily i can see the front of the roof rack through the sun roof so can see what i'm hitting.

Many thanks Guys for teriffic respose. Looks like 8 ft or 2.4m it is then depending on which side of the pond I build on. As its in Spain I better stick with SI units even though I'm a Pom!
In 1994 I lived in Oman and bought a brand new Disco 1 (most nimble and able desert car I ever owned if driven well). Anyway,Ranulph Feinnes and Nicholas Clapp had just spent a winter expedition in the southern desert looking for archaological evidence for the Biblical city of Ubar et al.For the trek they had had a very nice half roof rack designed by the local LR agent(Yes all their vehicles were LRs) that carried two spare jerries and a wheel.
I bought on of these to the great amusement of my neighbours who,because of the baggage on the roof nicknamed me 'The Refugee From Kuwait.
A few months later my wife was out on a long range and very expensive shopping expedition and tried to drive the rig into a underground carpark!!!
End of roofrack,end of gutters,end of story!!!
