Tsunami Relief in Khao Lak, Thailand
We came through Khao Lak, the worst Tsunami hit part of Thailand last week, and couldn't believe the devastation.
We had heard that things were getting "back to normal" but things are far from normal in this area.
The Thai's are amazing, and are working so hard to get their businesses back up and running. Many of them tell you their story of how the Tsunami has changed their lives and that of their families. It's heartbreaking to hear, but we are astounded by their resilience.
We stopped at the South end of town at the Khao Lak Nature Resort which has been donated by the owners to be used as a disaster relief centre for 1 year.
There are numerous projects and volunteers there, and any help no matter how short is most appreciated.
They will be needing loads of help for quite a few months to come, and the money you spend while in town helps to keep the business owners afloat.
We (and 2 other motorcycle overlanders) spent a couple of days there, and had a few different jobs, including building and painting furniture for schools, cleaning the debris that is constantly washed onto the beaches, and cutting a track down to the beach from the nature resort (to make it easier to collect the rubbish).
Check out their website at www.tsunamivolunteer.net and don't hesitate to call in on your way past.
Cheers
Trent and Jacqui
