Voluntering Latin America

I will be travelling to Latin America in December 2011, arriving from the USA and making my way south.

Because I don't have a time limit, I would like to do some volunteer work and contribute to a local community/society in the countries that I visit.

Perhaps you guys can help me on my way. All suggestions and ideas are welcome.

Greetings,

Lucien

EntreMundos - Free Volunteer Opportunities and NGO Services in Guatemala

This is Guatemala specific, but EntreMundos is an organization that matches up potential volunteers with available positions. I have been to their office, but have not worked through them personally, so do your own research.

Habitat for Humanity has builds going all over Latin America and may be worth checking out.

Try this Sloth sanctuary

It's in Costa Rica. I spent three weeks there last Christmas. They look after and care for rescued sloths.

Also you could try these guys if you want to patrol a beach at night and save turtles! Baja Sea Turtle Conservation Travel

Fundraising

Hey Everyone,

I'm bumping my own thread with a new question.

I would also like to combine my trip to do some fundraising for my sisters organisation: www.duara.org , apart from the volunteering work that I will do along the way.

I'm in the fase of brainstorming and came up with ideas like: ask friends and friends of friends to sponsor my sisters onganisation through me per kilometer, write to motorcycledealers, manufacturers, motorcycle clothing compagnies and donate a percentage of the retailprice of the stuff they are willing to "give" me, etc. I'm also thinking of making a facebook account and looking for a slogan.

Does anyone have some info or tips, be willing to help me out with info or sponsorship?

Lucien

The Muskoka Foundation

The Muskoka Foundation is a non-profit organisation that supports overland travelers in designing volunteering into their itinerary. Our slogan is "use what you know to do good as you go". We encourage independent travelers to share their skills, experience and knowledge through programs delivered to the local communities to support their sustainable development. We build an international network of partner organisations that work with those communities on everyday basis which allows us match traveler's skills to the community's needs, so that the impact can be truly meaningful. We provide our connections, curriculum, materials, equipment and support to make it all happen, free of charge to travelers and partner organisations.

Our vision is to create a global network of travelers who support developing communities in their effort to become independently sustainable.

Thumbs up

Hola Lucien,

If you are going to Ecuador, the Amazone side,
i could help you find a small project.
Reforest,or helping a children in a small Indian village (without parents).
A little help makes a huge difference to them.
If interested just sent me a message when you are coming close to Ecuador.

Good luck and saludos

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
