Getting to Cape Town
I was looking for some advice.
I am considering an overland adventure from Ireland to Cape Town this summer but have run into a problem. Due to current, eh, conflicts in Syria and Libya, getting to Egypt from Europe looks nigh on impossible. Overland through Turkey/Syria/Jordan is out as is Tunisia/Libya. Also, the ferry service between Iskendrun in Turkey and Damettia in Egypt appears to have vanished. Getting a ferry from Cyprus to Isreal and then overlanding it to Egypt looked promising until I discovered that the Sudanese wont allow you in with an Isreali stamp in your passport.
As you can tell I've put in a lot of research but have run into a brick wall. Does anyone out there know of a way to get a toyota hilux and an Irishman into Egypt from Europe?
Cheers.

On entering Israel we asked them not to stamp our passports . They stamped a post-it and stuck it in the passport. I think Sudan still has vehicle entry restrictions in high Summer (April to October) due to high temperatures and water shortages.

Hi Bren,
I did this last year from Cork but was able to use the Iskunderun/Port Said RoRo which has since stopped running to Egypt.
There was recent reports of the UN RoRo ship operating to Damietta (Bear in mind that these ships aren't really catering for cars and as such aren't too bothered about the information that's out there as the hauliers know the details.)
It's worth digging out the contact details of the Company from posts on the Hubb and emailing them yourself (Google translate if necessary) to check the most up to date info.
There are also relatively recent reports in the Saharan section of overlanders making it into Sudan after coming through Israel. This was around the time of the revolution though.
The other possible option is shipping to South Africa or Namibia (We met a British couple who shipped to Walvis Bay, I can dig out their details if you want) and were driving as far North as Ethiopia.
Don't forget the Carnet is 800% in Egypt!

Here is a summary how you can avoid or cross eqypt. There are restictions for 4x4, but not for bikes. Even with 4x4 you can choose your route, on a bike you have even more options.
4x4tripping: Rund um die Anreise auf der Ostroute von Afrika
There are many links to travellers who are currently on the way.
Also on the westroute are many travellers on the way:
Trans-Africa: Gerade Unterwegs...
Travellers are currently are on the west route, on the east or even on roundtrips.

Last minute we've shipped our vehicle from Holland to Cape Town as well, to be sure we'd make it to Africa and not waste too much time with reaching the African continent. We shipped by container and everything went very smooth.
Currently we are in Ethiopia. We will try in Addis & Khartoum for a Saudi transit visa to drive from Jeddah - Aqaba in 3 days . If this is not successful, we'll finish our journey in Port Sudan and ship the car back to Holland.
Will have to be back in NL in 6 weeks (for work) so will write an update on how it went.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
