I went to Dallah Driving School at the top of Takassusi road (just down from junction of Takassusi and Northern ring road. It is signposted if you come from the DQ end. It is the main place for licences.

You need to have blood test results, cash point receipt for fee (75 sr I think) to be paid direct from cashpoint (or some guys outside by phone for 100 SR), third party insurance cover (blood money), have your fingerprints taken 10 km away at the police place near Bhata, queue for eye test, queue for insurance checking, queue for form signing and computer entry, queue for licence, see captain for signature etc etc etc.

Bike has all lights and indicators.

Good luck!

what the

was i thinking ??

well... so i went to tristar and spoke to those guys about my problem and .... yes.. u guessed it .. they can't help me out. 'duh !!! what was i thinkin ?

The guy stated clearly that unless the bike is bought from Tristar, they cannot do anything about it. Well, i realised that it was quite reasonable on their part to say that. Why the fcuk would some one "help" you if you are not giving them business ?

anyways, i'm back to sqare one, but that atleast ruled out one of the options and makes my choices more narrow ... as if i had a lot of choices

so, i'm now approaching our official cargo handler to help me out with the importation part and plan to get the bike to Riyadh first. I'll figure out a way to register it later on myself or i may find a kind soul to help me out by that time.. who knows.

There is always something you learn when things don't go your way. I just learned that i need to apply for a "vehicle importation permit" from the Saudi dept of transportation to bring in the bike. For this i have to approach the dept thru my employers's Govt. Relations dept, after submitting an AWB no. and the bikes chassis & Engine serial no. (VIN in this case).

With this first lesson learnt, i am planning to take this issue head on and do it all myself (with some help of course..) so that others can benfit from my mistakes/learnings when they need to do something similar...

itching to ride

Keep posting your info

HI Vicky,

I've been following your thread on buying and registering a bike here. I am also interested to find out how to do it and to meet some people who are into offroading. I don't have a bike but would like to get back into it and explore Saudi.

So, please post as much as you find out.

Much appreciation for the info already to you and the other guys.

Cheers

Andy

Hi Andy,

If you are interested in only bringing the bike from outside, without registering in Saudi, then you can simply throw it into a container and get it shipped to you. The trouble is when you want to register it for On-road usage. I failed to get enough information after all efforts, and i have since bought my lovely Adv 990S from Tristar in Riyadh. Been more than a year now.

Redsnapper is actively into riding and he might be able to advise you about riding in Riyadh (i used to, but not anymore, live in Riyadh. I'm based in Al-Khobar now).

cheers & all the best
Vick

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
