How to bring a bike from Dubai to Riyadh
hey guys,

I'm contemplating buying a bike from Dubai as i found a very nice deal. I've pretty much decided to buy the thing so there's no pondering over whether i should buy it or not. Its only a question of "how" and not an "If" ....

My plan is to drive down to Dubai in my car with a bike trailer, pick up the bike (after paying the PO.. of course), load it into the trailer at Dubai and drive back to Riyadh.

1. Is this feasible ? anybody done this ?
2. Can i just landup at the saudi border from dubai, with the bike, pay the importation fees (5% ??) and be done with it ?
3. What documents might i need for this purpose ?
4.Will i be able to register (plate) the bike at the border ? or do i have to do it when i get back to Riyadh ?
5. What documents do i need from the PO for this (registering) purpose ?
6. How do i register the bike in Riyadh ?
7. If i am not allowed to do this (as an individual), are there any companies/agencies who do this ? any contacts/ph nos. ?

appreciate any/all info abt this.

A few questions:

Is it new from a dealer in Dubai or second hand?

Do you have a Saudi motorcycle licence & Igama?

What is the make of bike?

Hey ric,

Its a '02 520SX (the owner said that its an SX, but my bet is that its a 520EX with a SX seat cover !!!) from Dubai. so, its not a new one.

Nope, i dont have a "motosickle" license yet, but i do have a car drivers license and an Iqama since 1 year. I understand that the "motosickle" license can be had within a week upon giving a finger print test and a riding test (which should take a few hrs).

Bcos its an EX/SX i have the option of not registering it here for the roads, in the worst case and traler it to the dunes when i want to ride.

But i would prefer to plate is cos its already got headlamps, speedo (fll console) etc. (i'll have to add a tail lamp and trafficators/indicators if required for this - which i can do myself)

PS : Say ric, what bike do you ride ? and did u buy it from Tristar (in riyadh) ? I'm terribly tempted to buy the 990Adv that they've got there but having no experience with such a bike, i don't wanna kill myself. Hence the 520SX/EX.

Ive just bought a used 450 EXC-R from a guy here. For registration I need a bill of sale, igama, licence. I'll let you the full picture when I do it, hopefully next week.

The KTM Tri-Star guy (Abdul Rahman) was very helpful and is going to register it for a fee because he sold it in the first instance. I think the registration is 300 SR plus his time. He might be able to advise you.

The 990 is too much of a handful for me. You need something light but powerful on the sand.

I'm not sure on the score at the border. If it is second hand and you have the bill of sale and year of the bike and it is trailered you might be OK (no duty etc). I'd check this if I were you with the KTM guy however, or ask Jusef at the Harley showroom on the northern ring road, he is a good guy too.

OK ... i had a few mail interactions with mikko before he bought the 450EXC-R, regarding directions to Tristar blah blah ...

I have met Abdul rahman a few times when i visited his showroom looking for some spares for the F650, which i finally didn't buy from him . Surely a nice guy.

I will give it a try and ask him about the details regarding this matter.

Good luck on your bike registration. Being an EXC-R, it would already have a headlamp, but what about the tail lights and the indicators ? are you going to fit them additionally ? Are you adding any parts on the bike for the purpose of registration ?

Where did u go for your bike license ? the one on King Fahd road ?

I went to Dallah Driving School at the top of Takassusi road (just down from junction of Takassusi and Northern ring road. It is signposted if you come from the DQ end. It is the main place for licences.

You need to have blood test results, cash point receipt for fee (75 sr I think) to be paid direct from cashpoint (or some guys outside by phone for 100 SR), third party insurance cover (blood money), have your fingerprints taken 10 km away at the police place near Bhata, queue for eye test, queue for insurance checking, queue for form signing and computer entry, queue for licence, see captain for signature etc etc etc.

Bike has all lights and indicators.
