Qatar & UAE
Hi,
Altough tgetting a Saudi visa seems to be some sort of a gamble, I still intend to follow this way when I get to Khartoum probably next mai / june. The project is then to drive to the UAE & take a ferry to Iran.
According to the map, the road from Ryad to the UAE goes through Qatar for a few km. Do I need to get a visa for that in advance, or will they deliver one at the border? Since saudi transit visas are so short I don^t think I can afford waiting at the qatari border for more than a few hours... And if I need one, where is the place to get it before leaving Africa? Khartoum, N'Djamena (I'm a swiss citizen)? I didn't find any data on UAE representations in these countries.
Or perhaps I can ship my car from Qatar on to Iran??
Any intput is welcome!
Thanks Séb

Sorry for not replying sooner. I did not realise there was a Middle East travel forum before now! There is a direct border between Saudi Arabia and the UAE. No need to enter Qatar, although I've heard it's an interesting place to visit. It even has an inland sea!
Good luck with your plans.

FYI, the UAE has recently loosened up its visa requirements. I had to go there for business reasons last month - I was told to just get a visa at the airport on arrival, and there is now a list of about 25 countries whose citizens can just get a visa for a small fee upon arrival in the country. I suspect CH is one of them, I know Canada is one of them.

I live in Dubai and have just arrived by bike from Europe using the ferry/cargo ship from Bandar Abbass to Shajah UAE. I also did the reverse in 1999. Please remember this is a cargo ship and therefore you need Bill of Laden etc. for the bike so do not roll up and think you can get on board without going through the formalities.
Also you will need a visa for Iran which can only be issused in Dubai to persons with a UAE residence permit, many travelers have been stopped by this and end up freighting the bike to Pakistan.

Hi
As i used to live in Qatar, i can definetly say that there is no border between UAE and Q.
Qatar is a nice little country to visit. The Inland sea (a fjord in the middle of the sand dunes)is very nice to visit.
