spot on information about Syria !!!!
Hi Frederik and Dersu,
thank you for posting this spot on information about Syria here on the HUBB.
Sorry to read that thieves damaged your bike, mine got stolen in Damascus in January 2010 - pls read about it on another thread a bit further down. I spend a month in Damascus trying to get it back, but did not. Mainly because I could not get media attention. And also because of what you wrote, here again in red so everybody will read it:
What was really annoying about this whole experience was the Syrian attitude to it. Out of collective shame they will happily deny that something like this is at all possible in Syria. Both in Deir Ezzor and Palmyra I was refused parking the bike inside as it was 'unthinkable' that someone would steal it. Mentioning the attempted theft did not help, it was still unthinkable, Syrians do not steal.
However nice the average Syrian might be, make sure you park your bike inside, insist on it.
I was lucky that I did not have a carnet, leaving Syria was only possible because I had a police report.
My bike was stolen by foreigners, as far as I know. But only ten days before mine was stolen the thieves tried to steal an Africa Twin of a Swedish traveller, I found out, because other travelers (not Syrians) told me. Believe me, in this month I have heard so many lies and promises that this is enough for a life time. But it was also shocking to learn that people did not believe me, because these kind of bad things do not happen in Syria.
Greetings from Brazil
Mika

motorfriendly hotels.hostels, etc
Hello everybody
it's a cry ass shame that people steal motorcycles! Especially if you are in the ME and therefore a long way from home....
Is it an idea to register Motorfriendly Hotels? Hotels where you can safely park your iron horse without worrying about theft? We can start with the popular countries like, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon?
There have been a lot of travellers before that can help future travellers to enjoy a theft free trip!
I"m heading to the ME in march/april and I will certainly appreciate your postings on this topic and I will definately post mine on my trip!
Are you game?
I will open a new post for it......

Hi to the both of you, thanks for your responses.
Mika: I read your thread about having your bike stolen before. Can't imagine the amount of frustration you must have been feeling trying to get it sorted out.
In Damascus I was actually staying at the Al Haramein which is next to the hotel you stayed in. Like someone mentioned before, there it is possible to park the bike indoors.
woeste willem: I don't think you have to open a new thread for safe places to stay. Look towards the bottom of the HUBB categories and you will find one suitable for this. I'll make a post there about the 'safe for bike' places I stayed in in Syria.
Enjoy the new year

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
