I hope this is in the correct forum.

So here I am planning my trip for next year and one of the things that has occurred to me is what happens if I have a major breakdown and the bike is either unrepairable or its not cost effective to repair it?

Could it be scrapped in another country or would I have to ship it back to the UK?
Would this affect a carnet? (I will need one for Iran and Pakistan.)

This is concern for many, and I was once at this stage, to be honest if your travelling on a Car Net you cannot leave your bike under any circumstances leave it behind even if it has been written off. ( Unless its stolen but then you need a police report)

Part of the Carnet is that you will not leave your bike behind and if you do theres a chance the host country may try claim import duty on it which in turn will mean you will need to pay massive customs.

However there is a solution, if you break down then you can have the bike or whatever is remaining of it either shipped or air freighted back home or other parts of Europe. I know Air Iran do this service, or you can pay local tow truck or flat bed to drive it back to for you to the border of turkey whereby you can arrange for tow truck for it. ( You cannot leave turkey without your bike) If your in Europe then im assuming you'll be paying £50 to £90 quid for breakdown cover so ul be able to get it recovered back to the UK.

I know some break downs are un avoidable but try carry spares, I mean unless you crash an write it off some mechanic maybe able to get to be able to driveable for you with the right parts. Depends what bike you have also to see if parts are readily available or not.

The procedure will depend on the Customs department/person of the country where the vehicle breaks down. You'll want the carnet signed off. The Customs will probably want proof of the vehicles destruction, police report, photos will probably help. They may make claims for the vehicles customs duty .. proving it is no longer a vehicle and/or of little to no value is your problem. Dumping the bits on their desk may not be appreciated

This happened to me last year in Azerbaijan, no carnet but written into my passport, a contact there spoke to customs and they allowed me to dump it in the customs controlled area in Baku, I expect something like this is possible most places.
