I.T. Work

Right now I'm in the process of planning a low budget RTW trip and I'm exploring possibilities of working along the way. I'm an American and for the past 12 years I've been a software developer working on a variety of platforms. Also, I have a fair bit of experience on the hardware / network side. As it is, I have a tiny bit of work I can do remotely so I will be bringing a laptop along, however, it's not nearly enough.

I'm wondering if anyone with similar qualifications has had any experience finding work along the way in various parts of the world.

I've also been considering the CELTA cert for teaching english.

Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike,

I'm based in Belgium and have various projects during the year, drop me a mail if you want, (matthew point mason at riverwoods point net).. if you are a US citizen how could we pay you ? I appreciate you'll say cash, but you're not a EU resident can you provide invoices for the work done....

I guess its possible to get a international VAT (tax) number

cheers
Matt

If you're an IT Guru you can find jobs on this site: Outsource to Freelancers, IT Companies, Programmers, Web Designers from India, Russia, USA, and more - oDesk and this site (though I don't like it as much) Elance | Outsource to freelancers, professionals, experts, and consultants - Get work done on Elance.

Another option is Web Marketing, it pays very well for the right-minded people, keep in mind that most people fail at it.

Recently I found a job on oDesk and also have a successful web marketing campaign running at the moment, going back overseas in 2 weeks and just going to relax somewhere and do this stuff as it beats the hell out of working in an office.

The trick with finding remote employment is always in the cover letter! If you're not mentally challenged and you are a native English speaker and didn't lie about your credentials then once you have lined up the Skype interview you will most likely have the job so put loads of effort into your first impression as the employers receive tons of applications. It also helps to complete your profile and make it as appealing as possible.

Aussie

Hi there Mike - I work in IT and telecoms and arrived in Austrlia from UK overland, and found work immediately. You can look on SEEK - Australia's no. 1 jobs, employment, career and recruitment site. There is tonnes of contract work. I did not have the correct visa, but if you can mention, amongst others, UNIX on your CV you are almost guaranteed a visa. I got my visa through a visa agency (who end up becoming your umbrella comapny). They are Lester Associates, Lester Associates - The experts in contract management

Where are you going specifically?

Well, I really would like to do a full RTW trip, but right now I'm focusing on Latin America. Trying to build up funds, gear, work and maybe even sponsors.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
