Generally you need to have all the paperwork in the same name or else a legal document that covers any discrepancy and in some countries each person can only temporarily import one vehicle free of import duties. Been a couple of years so things might have changed (but I'd bet rules are tighter now) but we had problems because our vehicle is German so we have to get someone else to register and insure it for us and luckily they accepted a receipt in German that proved we really owned it. Had the same problem in Turkey and into Mexico so I imagine it is universal.
