Tempoary Import of Commercial Vehicle
Hello Chaps,

I`m on next Sundays boat and looking forward to another great adventure in Maroc.

A friend of mine is planning his first trip in June and he wants to bring his VW Transporter panel van (commercial van no windows or rear seats).

My understanding of the rules is that commercial vehicle are allowed 3 months temp import and everyone else is allowed 6 months.

Is my understanding correct?

That's the theory, though I suspect if it's clearly not being used for commercial purposes you might be able to argue for longer if needed.

I've used my Nissan Navara pickup truck with a bike on the back before but can't remember what I was given.

OK thanks Tim. He does not to be turned away on entry to Maroc having driven all that way !

Does anyone else have a view on this matter ?

He won't be turned away, I've waited to get in with a guy at Tan Med in a similar postion who once showed the interior of his van got 6 months, if it looks like a camper inside I don't think there will be problem. Worst case he get 3 months and has to return to a border to leave and come back again for an extension .

Of course he won't get turned away. But he won't get more than 3 months in one go either, as that's all he entitled to as an individual.

The 3 or 6 months refers to how many months in a 12 month period he's allowed to have the vehicle in the country. If it's a private vehicle he can bring it in for 6 months in total, if a commercial then only 3.

I arrived at Tangier Med in January 2012 in my Transit van (same size as a VW Transporter) and my XR400 in the back; no problems getting in and given 3 months.
If you're buying insurance in Morocco having a panel van is expensive. I tried insuring it as a camping car but the insurance salesman insisted I pay the panel van rate despite me saying i was sleeping in it. Sorry, can't recall how much I paid for 1 month.

Insurance for commercial vehicles is 2750 dirhams for one month, so considerably more than the 950 dirhams for a regular vehicle.

Update my friend arrived into Tangier Ville Port last weekend with his VW transporter Panel van.

He completed his D16ter before arrival and in the drop down menu he highlighted the car - camping option.

Moroccan customs we happy that it was to be used as a camper and got 6 months!

The chap at the insurance office read the import certificate and insured it as a camper. cost was 1950 dhs (190 euros) for 3 months.
Even though the V5 says panel van.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
