MapSource on PC plus using a generic GPS receiver
Have mapsource installed on a laptop together with openstreetmaps for most of South America and it is all working as it should.
I also have a USB-connected GPS antenna which also works - meaninjg it shows the current position coordinates when used with the test program.
Is it possible to configure MapSource to get the position from the GPS receiver and display the current position on the map.
I thought I saw instructions on the web somewhere for doing this but can't find them again. Or was it for another Garmin mapping program?

Install nRoute, it will use same mapdatabase as Mapsource so you don't have to install the maps again.
Best Mapsource version to work with: 6.15.6
nRoute version: 2.7.6

I'm also a big fan of nRoute.
You will need GPS Gate (free) to get a non Garmin GPS to work in it though, but note GPS Gate does not work with Win 7 and Win 8
As it happens on my last trip my Garmin GPS failed and I used a 7" Android Tablet with OSMAND and OS maps with great success and I'm thinking of ditching nRoute now.

Problem using a tablet for longer period is max temp of 35 celcius. They have no cooling fan.
Permanent loading the battery is also a problem, so for the long term a tablet will not do.

A newer Mapsource will not work ok with nRoute, the best version is 6.15.6 as I wrote before.
In nRoute you can't install maps at all, it allways uses the maps installed in Mapsource, even if you can't see it.

Try MapReverseConverter nRoute cannot see the later gmap format files.

Hi all
I have a "old" notebook acer 10" - with XP on it - I basically only use it for checking email when travelling as is light.
I installed Nroute - Basecamp and they works fine - also downloaded some OSM and Olaf and I can see them in both softwares.
I bought a USB GPS receiver Variotek VT-200 - tried to install /use GPS Gate without success ... anyone have some knowledge about it ? i am quite dummie with these kind of things..and would need some step-by-step help ...
I am planning to go to Morocco in April and would be handy to have it as navigation system to be parallel to paper map
thanks in advance
Nico

Harry M:
If you want to use the newer Garmin maps with NT technology you have to reconvert them first, older maps no and OSM maps neither.
Nico 73:
Garmin uses another format for there GPS signal, you can convert you NMEA signal to the Garmin format using: franson gps gate. Just google for it.
