not able to follow routes
Hi some help please...
I've landed in marocco after being aided on getting here using a garmin 340.
ive downloaded both olaf and osm and made lots of routes to follow using basecamp.
it worked fine in europe but now when I select a route it tells me it can't calculate it. Indeed it cant seem to calculate any route in marocco. Back to the maps for time being which is fine on road but a littke worried about off the road trips. Has anyone a clye on what is haopening?
Cheers dave

Just a thanks to Bertrand whos post has now dissappeared, but, in short, I had c8nfused the sat nav by importing two sets of user defined routes. Getting rid of one set has meant I can follow the pre programmed osm routes.
I have been navigating mainly by Berber shephards in any case. The pistes seem to change quite rapidly!

You have solved that problem by the sound of it.
One other snag you might come up against is that in OSM, sometimes there are small breaks in the continuity of the maps. They may represent only a few metres of road, but the software sees it as two separate roads with no path between and sends you hundreds of km on a long detour.
Great maps and absolutely fantastic value for money, but never to be fully trusted.

That's why I don't rely on GPS or any electronic device when I'm planning a vacation. I prefer hard copy of road map to Google map as who knows when you get out of network. However, nice to learn you have solved your problem.
Have a nice journey

maps.me is the solution if you've got android device and can get internet access to download the country map you need...
you can export the basecamp POI's to a kml file and save it somehwere then put it on your device to import it to maps.me app.

I like the app. Another solution is the buying of maps from Maps2Anywhere website. This website has huge collection of all the things that make your journey great! Right from road maps, travel videos, tourist guides, language course DVDs to globes, Maps2Anywhere.com is the solution of all tourists' problems.

I've looked at their website and I am not convinced.
For the UK, they are selling the UK OS maps that can be purchased in many places in country, for less cash.
Further, they are marketing the paper based products of the OS; there have been significant developments in access to digital mapping and the UK is not an exception. You can access such digital maps for free - see other discussions in this section about "maps, navigation, compass" as well as some discussion of online route planning within ------------ well, within "route planning".
By the way, you won't find the "UK" within that website - it doesn't exist according to their alphabet-based filing system.

Maps.me uses OSM data as its base. Any breaks in a road in OSM data will also be present in Maps.me (and other apps using OSM data e.g. OsmAnd, Locus, Mapout etc).
You can repair the OSM data yourself .. so the next time you use it it is fixed (and it is also fixed for other people).

Is there anything in particular that you guys like about Maps.me?
(I think I tried it out a while ago and it is not on my phone now so I would have ditched it for one of the dozens of others that are in the Android market).

I'm just using maps.me in my first foregin trip, CE Europe. What is very nice, is the maps have large database of usefull, not popular in other GPS apps points like fountains, viewpoints, small walkpaths, public stairs for pedestrians etc. However using it on highways hubs may be difficult, because it dont show which road lane you should go to drive in proper direction. Another thing that is strange - any time you update the app, you need to download again all the maps you already have.

I had a look at Morocco OSM ... I cannot see many breaks as you describe. I have been working in India to remove such breaks but there is more to do there than Morocco.
Perhaps the problem is the app rather than the base data.. may not like long routes.
-------------------------
If you are interested in improving the OSM data you can do it. I try to do this before I leave on my trip so it is as good as I can make it using satellite data that is available for use in OSM. There are also tools to check various aspects of the OSM data .. one of them does check for breaks in roads. There is no point in looking at the tools unless you are prepared to actually work at improving the data by getting an account, once you have that and have the time to learn how to fix/add things then you can use OSM Inspector | Geofabrik Tools .. here is India .. you need to change the "View:" box to "routing" and that then shows the breaks in roads.

I completely agree with you, and thanks for pointing that out. Actually this online store has been adding the products for almost all the countries and I have been buying road maps from this website only. Maps.me is an excellent app, no doubt.

I have just about run out of storage space on my phone as a result of this feature.
That is a decided disadvantage IMO.

Could you say a bit about what you like about Maps.me - anyone on here?
I reinstalled it a while ago, probably after reading this thread earlier; now, as outlined above, it has filled up my 16 Gb SD card - this is not solely because of this app; I do have other mapping apps in use, but it does as mentioned in the other quote above.
I find that other, similar, mapping apps only download updates (I have about 5 of them on my phone and another lot of mapping apps on a tablet).
So, for a second time, I intend to delete Maps.me from my phone unless I can find good reason to retain it.
As a further comment, when the maps.me app is deleted the mapping files are not removed from the phone.
It is necessary, on my phone anyway, to hook it up to a computer and delete all of the maps.me folders that hold the maps.
Otherwise, some Gb of data remains in the memory but is never accessed by the deleted app.
