Nuvo turns on after bike is turned off

I have a Garmin Nuvo 550, about 3 minutes after I turn my bike and the GPS off, the GPS turns itself back on. Is there a setting to prevent this from happening?

Is your GPS hooked up to the CanBus connected plug of a recent BMW bike?

I think as part of its shutdown sequence, the CanBus becomes active for a brief period some moments after the ignition is turned of, and this event might be confusing your GPS and causing it to wake up again.

The easiest solution might be to simply bypass the CanBus and hook up your GPS directly to the battery using a fused cable (and maybe a relay).

This is just a hypothesis, I have no idea why the CanBus would become active again... perhaps part of the immobilizer logic or alarm being activated. I'm looking into my own wiring options and have read others having similar problems as yours.

It is hooked up to the canbus connection but that is supposed to stay on for something like 5 or 10 minutes after the bike is turned off. The GPS is coming back on about 3 minutes after the bike is turned off. I guess I'll have to connect directly to the battery. The canbus connection is such a convenient hookup option but with a very inconvenient result.

I think the CanBus system wakes up just briefly, but the GPS doesn't shut back down afterwards for whatever reason.

Just a thought. Do you have a password or PIN set for the Nuvi? If you do, try without the password set and see if the GPS will properly shut down again after the brief wake up. It could be "hanging" at the password screen. Probably wont work but worth trying.

Nope, no password. Is there a setting to have the unit come on only when the power button is pressed?

Hmm, not sure. These folks had the same issue on the 1200 awhile back, maybe you can contact them to see if they found a solution (other than wiring directly to the battery):

does it not come up with the "shutdown in 30 seconds, yes/no?" screen when the power is cut?

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
