Route Planning for my Garmin Zumo GPS

Maybe this has been described already.
Even I could not find it

But this is the way that I have selected to do my planning.
It is my choice. I do not claim that it is the best way or the only way.
Take what you want. And leave the rest.
I hope that it can be of use for someone.

The work is done using a Windows-PC and a Garmin Zumo 595
(Sorry for the Swedish text in the menus))
But should work with any PC and Garmin GPS.

I start with Google "My Maps" (Not google maps)
Where I create a map (with layers if needed)
I search for points that I will use as way points. And include them in the map.
I name them after the planned trip and with numbers.

I export this work to a KML file.

Time to start Base Camp.
I use the
- file
- import
And import the KML file. You can place it where you want it. I have an area called "My collections"

Now, I have a file with Way Points that I can use in Base Camp.
I use "create new route". And pick way points from the list.
Since they have numbers, it is an easy and fast task.

When the route is done.
I first "send" the way point file the device. Good to have for planning direct on the device. If wanted.

Then I "send" the route to the device.
I use the memory card to save internal memory. Slower. But more memory. And less risk to mess up.

Time to disconnect the Device from the PC.
And start it up stand alone.

I go to
-Apps
- Trip planner
- the "tool"
- import

I select the file I have created start the process of importing.

=> I have a route in my Garmin that I can use.
Found under : apps - trip Planner - Imported trips

If I want to reuse the result on another device or share it with others, there is an export feature in Base camp.
Both the file with way points and the file with the route can be exported to .gpx files
These files can be handled as any files on the computer.

=
I use to create the route in small pieces. To make calculation faster.
And changes easier.
It often takes a lot of way points to get the path you want.

It can be anything from one route per day. Or one route per specific part.
(Of course not for "transport parts" from A to B. But for interesting areas.)
To one route for 2 weeks of travel. Depending on the resolution of the planning.
E.g
Route Napoleon
Stella Ronda
as separate routes.

Portugal's N2 divided in 5 days
Again.I do not want to ride the shortest or fastest way from Faro to Chaves. I want to follow N2. And do several specific detours.

But in other cases, with one Way Point per day => 15 points => 2 weeks

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
