Tom Tom and OSM
Looks good, thanks for the help. Trying to get into something on my Tom Tom downloading it

I have currently

1. Downloaded mapsource and Colebatchs file
2. Currently waiting download for my opensource map.

After this I guess I should be able to just grab the co-ordinates from mapsource and enter them into my TOm tom?

Mapsource is a Garmin software. Is a Garmin software compatible with a competitor hardware like Tom Tom?

I am taking my laptop, so I am planning on using mapsource to open the files by colebatch, from this I can take the waypoint infomation. (Long/Lat) that I can then manually enter this data into my Tomtom each time If i need it.

Will look into your way sometime today, Bertrand. Thanks

Just got in touch with tomtom customer service.
Your device can hold a maximum of ... 3 waypoints ...
and it cannot handle .csv files, not waterproof, 2 hr battery...
IMHO,you may wish to reconsider your choice of gps. Starting up your laptop each time you need a waypoint is going to drive you to drink!

Thanks for the infomation. To be fair I will be in a car (so will have the satnav hardwired, waterproof not an issue)

I wasn't planning on using it past getting into West Russia anyway, but noticed how useful some of these waypoints are.

Papermaps and what not are out first port of call, so will be using the tomtom for back up.

Lot easier in a car then a bike

As you will be in a car maybe use your tomtom to feed the gps signal to your notebook where you'll have your OSM maps.
I've no idea if your tomtom is capable of this or not.

You need to use NRoute if you are going to use a laptop and an external GPS, even then I think it needs to a Garmin unit.

Edit: Mmm it doesn't seem that Nroute is still available. I am pretty certain that neither Mapsource or Basecamp have the function that allow for a laptop to be used for live navigation.

Yes it is Nroute. Still available but it is not supported by garmin.
Neither Basecamp nor Mapsource have this ability. And you most probably will need a garmin unit.

Maybe Oziexplorer is the way to go for laptop users - it will import OSM maps (in Beta) and will import Walter's gpx file.

But then you loose the routing.

TBH IMHO - buy a Garmin GPS - the Montana is most excellent unit.

As an alternative to both garmin and Tom tom et al, there is the apps for phone/tablet approach to navigation:-

Worth consideration for 4 (or more) wheel travel.

Even motorcyclists are stuffing a tablet into a tank bag nowadays.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
