What mapping system
Hi All
Need some help. I want to drive over the Pyrenees from Santander through Spain, France, Andorra and eventually end up in Italy in the landcruiser spending as much time as possible on 4x4 tracks.
I've been scanning the internet on the best way to navigate this though still cant find the perfect way to do it. At the moment I am abroad with work so the internet isn't the best and I just keep finding myself getting bogged down in various forum threads that are normally out of date. I have an Ipad 2 which i was going to download multimaps onto though on talking to them they say they have no mapping for the Spanish side. I then looked at Oziexplorer and again cant find any mapping for the areas I want. I need to be able to download all the mapping so as i can use it offline and find all the tracks I want on the go. Also If it makes it any easier i was thinking of getting another tablet or device that would be better suited.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Tom

Maps
2 kinds of electronic maps -
Raster - like a photo of a paper map ... they don't change the data as you zoom in and out. Like your UK OS maps.
Vector maps. The data can change as you zoom in and out. As you zoom in more data becomes visible so the blank spaces are occupied. Zoom out and data is removed so the screen is not too crowed.
Few programs/devices handle both kinds of maps.
Oziexplorer only does raster maps.
-------------------------------
Any map (electronic/paper) will not have all the data, some will contain errors. Most are set up for one kind of use.
--------------------
Most of the present mapping uses are for paved roads. Some are set up for bicycles, pedestrians. Very few are set up for 4x4 use. Tracks for Africa/Australia are 2 I know of .. and those are for Garmin use...
----------------
I'd start you out with OSM (free vector map- available for all the world) ... for ipad .. mapout application maybe good. The 4x4 tracks only show up when zoomed in. And not all of them will be shown. And probably some of them may be private. But it is a start. And the price is right. And it works 'off line'.

As for finding track/trail data: it seems to me that many folks don't like to share that kind of information.
The trail riders federation in the UK is of that ilk, keeping their info close to their own membership.
Some is shared in the HUBB within various threads and there are websites which are based solely on the theme of sharing GPS data, such as Wikiloc.
Wikiloc - GPS trails and waypoints of the World
I am sure you can find other, similar, sites by a general search of the WWW.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
