Question Algeria (Oran) to Mali

Has anyone ever crossed from Oran to Tiout, then to Timnoun and Raganne into Mali. Is this a feasible route and one that can be attempted. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

The road Oran - Timimoun - Reggane is open. But the piste from Reggane to Bordj Mokhtar (at the border with Mali) is closed for tourists actually.
You need to drive via Tamanrasset, tho piste Tam - Bordj Mokhtar is open.
But security in northern Mali is not so good, a guide in Mali is recommanded.

Regards, Yves

Thanks Yves

Thanks Yves, What is that stretch of road like and where can I get information about a guide from. Do you recommend any particular map which locates that road? Sorry to have so many questions. Regards Andre

Hi Andre,

The Michelin 953 map is all you need.
The tarmac section is ok, no 4wd needed. Some sections between In Salah and Tam are quite bad - you need to drive a bit more carefully. Good piste betweeen Tam and Bordj Mokhtar. Best done by 4x4. 2WD only for experienced desert drivers.
Bordj Mokhtar - Tessalit - Gao: 2wd possible but only for very experienced desert drivers.
Guide in Mali: Mali Tour, Badi Faradji votre guide au Mali, votre agence de voyage au Mali ( will cost ~500 EUR or more. )

Btw, guide needed in Algeria too (about 400-500 EUR).

Regards, Yves

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
