am i daft ???
iv'e always had an ambition to go round the world by motorbike .... my first question is...which bike should i buy for the purpose of travelling over sand , tarmac and any other surface you can think of ??? question two and last for now is ... i'm planning a round the world trip for probably 2 years time , but after reading the adventure m/cycling handbook , i think i may have bitten off a bit much. the problem i have is that i will have hopefully enough money to fund it in one hit , am i daft for even contemplating this venture or not , a divorce settlement will fund this expo and i know that if i do it a little at a time , the money will get spent inbetween and i'll never get the chance again .. i hope someone can help me , and i know the choice is mine at end of day but i think i just need re-assuring and a nudge in the right direction !!! thanks for reading this ,,, richieboy

Well, you could spend the money on good times at the pub with your pals, but you wouldn't remember them well. You could buy a nice sports car but keeping it will drain you of money for years to come. You could buy a nice house and sit inside wondering what it's like fetching water from a well in the Sahara desert... or you could just slowly piss it away over the years and wonder where it all went ;-)
You don't have to go around the world, either. No sense in giving up if you can't make it around the globe, just go as far as you can and learn all you can. Every travel account I've ever read said 'do it, you won't regret it'. I challenge you to find someone who will tell you travelling is dull, uninspiring, or a horrible waste of money - or that expensive material goods are a fantastic investment years after their novelty wears off.
Any bike listed in the handbook will do fine. The cheaper you find one for, the more money you'll have to spend time riding it, the less money a carnet will cost, etc. Test ride some bikes and see which ones suit your style.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
