Atar or Faya in February?
Not one to ever give up on Africa, Maurice Freund of Pointe-Afrique airlines recommend a trip to Atar in February.
"Maurice Freund Atar confirms flights in February 2012. Point Africa is ready for the challenge, in association with the Mauritanian government. It remains to find the passengers ... We count on you!"

He wants to start up Chad but had this reply from Quai d'Orsay
Sahara: reopening of Chad | Food, Drink & Travel
Hard to get support when there are SAM missiles around.
They are flying to Mopti but perhaps that will come to a halt now?

Chad tours
At least he got a good answer about Faya. Perhaps Maurice F should ask for help from 'Le Directeur'?
Checked again the other day and Le Point stopped doing Chad (that food & drink link is 6 months old), but my impression is that despite 'Libya', Chad is going through one of its periodic lulls when it's safe to travel. They don't seem to come very often and maybe its already too unsafe, as the letter suggests.
I get the feeling legit Sahara trade and tourism is like a river: as one area gets blocked the flow finds another way round - as with Mori, Libya and Gilf opening up in the 90s when Alg and Niger were too risky.
Some may remember Ginge Fullen from the book (p377 - The Last Saharan Summit). As it happens he is trying to help start up an agency for the north of Chad with his former guides - or maybe its the other way round. If anyone wants a contact, send a PM. Prices about the same as Niger. It won't be Abercrombie & Kent, but what is in Chad.
I wish I'd jumped at the chance with an LPA tour to Faya.
Forum contrib Gerbert was there last year. One of the few:

No tickets for sale yet as far as I could see.
The thing is, will they offer a circuit with the vols?
I'd hope so otherwise landing Faya is a bit of a jump in the deep end.

"15 days circuit has three main stages (4 days Tibesti) ... 3 days between Fada and Faya (via lakes Ounianga) 4 days in Ennedi and 3 days to get to N'Djamena or reverse depending on the date of departure" variable price 4x4 €160/d

Paris-Atar tourist flights
A charter flight with 130 French tourists out of Paris to Atar arrived in Mauri on Sunday - as a 'proof of concept' to kick-start tourism in Northern Mauri. Saharan version of the avalanche poodle.

In the latest newletter Freund tells how Sarkozy made him loose €224600 and the extreme fatigue he suffered after negotiating with locals and various authorities for months, finally woving never to offer Chad again (although the trips made were mostly successful).
But then he may change his mind again with some coercion
and indeed, they will fly to Faya again december 2012

This is the only exception to the abrupt decline of tourism to the rest of Sahara.
