atlantic route in august/september2003
Me and a friend of mine are planning to do atlantic route with 2WD at the end of this august or at the beginning of September. Does anybody has the same thoughts? Since there is no convoy anymore, i heard it is very practical and wise to travel in the company or others, specially if you have 2WD. so, if there is somebody who is also planning this great adventure, please contact us.
I just talked to a girl who did this journey three years ago and she mentioned something about very expensive car insurance which is charged at Mauretania or Senegal border. Is this true? What do that kind of costs amount to, in general?
thanks for the answers,
liza

I'll *probably* be going the same way at the same time, by motorcycle.
Perhaps this should be in Travellers seeking...

Hey,
did the route in a 2wd VW van, not too bad but team up with someone with a 4wd.
Also use a guide as trying to follow GPS co-ordinates will make for a longer trip and your transmission will suffer for it. We met two seperate 4wd teams who had clutch problems, as a result of trying to do it on their own!! The guides will know te best route and they will try and do it as fast as possible, time is money for them.
The desert will take a lot out of you. Make sure you have good recovery kit - tow ropes * we snapped 4 two tonne straps!!
Your car will suffer so take Chris' advice and get your vehicle properly prepared.
Lastly, make sure that you get on with the people you team up. This is especially true for 2wd as you will need help when you get stuck - after ten times you stop counting......
Don't be daunted - the desert was the highlight of our Africa trip.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
