Car insurance for Mauritania

Hi,

Is it possible to obtain car insurance to Mauritania in Morocco? Where? We are trying to avoid a purpose visit to Nouakchott.

Thanks and regards,

NCR

Hi,

If you are entering Mauritania from the Western Sahara you can buy an insurance in Nouadhibou.

Cheers,
José

Hi José,

Sorry, but there was a mistake in my previou post. I wanted to say avoid Nouadibou and not Nouack.

Thanks and regards,

NCR (i.e. Nuno Cardoso Ribeiro, from Lisbon, Portugal).

>> someone told about a global W.Africa >>insurance... any news about???

Hi !! , apparently there's one insurance valid for all the CFA area (which doesnt include RIM) .

In my experience , vehicle insurance is only checked by the cops inside cities (and I was once caught without one ... and the "fix" only was 500 UM !) . I woulndt worry much about the insurance , as -should the inthinkable happen- It doesnt have actuall indenmity coverage at all .(or so was I told) .

Also ... the police only checks a little paper (60 mm x 60 mm paper which one should stick in the windshield ) .

Is printed in Cyan and Black (both of which are colour-printer friendly tone ) .

I think I can still find mine and scan it should someone be interested

-However , the insurance for Senegal seems much more serious / expensive / difficult to forge . Also , there's a insurance man at the border @ Diame.

HAve fun .

You can drive direct from the Moroccan border to Nouakchott withpout buying insurance. The only checks are at Nouamghar (unlikely) and near Toolit (70km south of nouamghar). Obviously you will probably be checked on the way into NKT. I am not aware of anyone being in trouble in Nouamghar or Toolit for not having insurance.

I would advise people to buy insurance as not having it will lead to serious difficulties if you have a major accident. You also leave yourself open to all forms of ptroblems from the police at various checkpoints. This goes for all countries in Africa.

The Brown Card "Carte Bruin" insurance covers almost all states in West Africa. If you intend visiting more than one country then it is worth buying it. Technically it is available in Nouadhibou but they simply dont give it to you, why I dont know. It is available in NKT and in Rosso-Mauritanie as well as Rosso-Senegal. The cost is about CFA 28,000 (€42) for a month for a small truck and about CFA 18,000 for an average car. It is cheaper in St Louis and Dakar (Dakar is best)than at the border, there is also a lot less hassle, so maybe its worth buying a five day local insurance and getting your other insurance in a major city. The same also applies if entering Mali at say Nioro, Gao or Kidal or Assamaka or <Arlit in Niger.

Alessie Insurance, www.alessie.com offer an insurance which covers all of Africa (and appears to be accepted by most of the W.African countries). They also do RTW cover...

Sam.

PS I have used them in the past (although never had to claim).

If you are heading for Rosso/Senegal then take a right before you hit Rosso and drive to Diama via the piste on the dyke. In Diama insurance is avaialble for multiple coutries as well, but without the unbeleivable scams and robbery of Rosso. It's also a nice drive.

I bought insrance in Atar when I arrived off the train - NDB is a pit and well avoided too...
