Car in Someone Else's Name and Driving From Spain to Ghana
Hi everyone!
Priffe had a great idea in response to my last post, and I am wondering if you guys think that this would be ok:
The NGO that I run is getting a car in Madrid. Due to Spanish law, we can't get the car on our name, so the car will stay in the current owner's name, but we will have export plates and a letter from the owner donating the car to my NGO and also a copy of her passport.
Does anybody have any idea if the various authorities along the way will stop us because the title of the car is not in the name of anyone in the car?
Thanks a million for the idea Priffe!
- Jeffrey
PS, If the general feel is that yes, the above will be ok, then I'll be doing another post to see if anyone wants to assemble at Motel Barbas on Jan 3/4 to cross Mauri.

This is quite a common situation, especially when tour companies are transporting participants' motorcycles.
Ignore the donations aspect which is difficult to explain/prove, the simplest way is to get a letter from the registered keeper authorising you to drive the vehicle to Ghana. The more official this looks the better, multiple languages would be good.
You will also need the original of the carte grise (vehicle registration papers).

Keep it simple.
We did this several times, once with an old Lada, twice and with an articulated bus (really).
The most important thing is that the customs officer or whoever asks for the car document en route can connect your name/passport to the name on the car papers.
As #2 and #3 said, write a simple authorization preferably in French (we had it in Hungarian just for fun) and highlight the owner and the driver with bold so as they can see the connection: he authorizes you to drive his car without limitation, etc.
That's it. If you put some random stamps on top it looks even more formal and they'll love it
