Crossing Sahara with bicycle
Hi Chris
I am planing to cross Sahara by bicycle and set world record of fastest crossing of Sahara by bicycle. This is to raise money for building a school in Madagascar
I have two option to do this
1. Egypt -Sudan(Prefered option)
2. Algeria - Niger
Under the rule of Guinness book of world record I am not allowed to
use ferry. So the first option technically is difficult. I was
wondering if you could help me with the following
1. Is there anyway that I can get from Egypt to Sudan without ferry crossing?
2. How about Algeria to northern Niger route? What do you think of the current security situation? I realised for using this route I need a guide. Where can I get guide with support car?
Many thanks
Reza

Hello Reza
1. Is there anyway that I can get from Egypt to Sudan without ferry crossing?
Although a new road around the lake got mentioned recently - until or if this is completed and opened to tourists, the ferry is the only legitimate way.
2. How about Algeria to northern Niger route? What do you think of the current security situation?
Right now quite bad, but more significantly it's 210km of sandy piste from Assamaka to Arlit.
I realised for using this route I need a guide. Where can I get guide with support car?
In Algeria - any agency that is game will lay it on at a price ( see here).
Is there a reason the Atlantic Route does not count? It seems the easiest way by far for cycling: virtually no piste; lakes; mandatory guides or too many bandits.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
