Tin Alkoum was used by locals before 2011, and now maybe too - let alone clandestine crossings.
But for a few Saharan countries, and Libya especially, only certain borders are open to non-African tourists. Occasionally there have been exceptions, and for a traveller with local languages, connections as well as incentives and a sense of adventure, anything is possible.
It is true that on the north Libyan transit on this forum we have not heard of overland tourists having problems or coming to harm, despite what makes the mainstream news here.
