Egypt – revolution memory and uweinat mountain barbary sheep
Just returned from gilf kebir area in Egypt, it’s very quiet, a good coordination with security crew drivers helps a lot in convoy progress !
During the trip, the memory of the Egyptian revolution on 25-1 was celebrated by placing a stone monument and putting the Egyptian flag inside,
In uweinat, 4 barbary sheep were spotted in karkur talh early in the morning, they did not escape fast as expected and I managed to capture the picture of one of them
Maybe that indicates no presence of hunters for a while, or at least that’s what I hope
Best regards
Mahmoud Mohareb

thanks Andras
Patience is a must for someone who lives in Africa
The officer asked me why you drive in uweinat without GPS , and I smiled and remembered you and the trip when we spent some days exploring uweinat on foot , thanks again!
Best regards

Dear Mahmoud,
We are off to the Gilf and Uweinat during the first week of March 2012.
I see from your post that the place is serene and peaceful.
Is it true there is a military outpost at the entrance of Karkour Talh?
Any security issues we should consider.
We applied for permits yesterday, and it seems we will be having two police cars' escort.
I see you are from Alexandria, same for me.
It would be nice if we can meet!
My name is Jean-Paul Machico.
My email is machico@link.net
Maybe we can exchange numbers and meet.
Thank you.

Dear Jean-Paul ,
Im going also on second week in March and it would be nice to meet in Alexandria, my number is 01001011466,
Yes if you go all the way to uweinat you will have to take 2 cars with security crew, the drivers are from Baharya oasis, it’s an advantage to be nice to the drivers, after all its your convoy and you want them to follow without much delays, also you can ask the drivers to camp along distance from your camp to have privacy and quite nights, I recommend being nice to them rather than ignoring them completely, I tried both ways and being nice is more practical.
Security wise: there is a security crew present at all time, you will pay a lot for them, so consider the positive side of this system, there are 6 armed men guarding you and your group!
For uweinat , the military outpost is not in karkur talh , I never sow it before , I remember to see the location on the internet to the east of the mountain , and if you want to see the Barbary sheep , try to camp outside karkur talh and to visit in early morning , the beautiful animals were feeding peacefully in early morning when I saw them ,
Looking forward to meet and wishing you a very nice time in the beautiful Egyptian Sahara
Mahmoud

The military post is discretely tucked away among the small hills about 10 kms east of Uweinat, almost on the Egypt/Sudan border. If you don't know the location (the escorting officer will) you can easily pass within a couple of hundred metres without spotting it.
