Egypt without carnet - done that
Did it with my friends last february with 2 old LC 60´s. Drove from Nuweiba to Aswan in 4 days with an Egyptian guide that cost us about 120 US dollars per vehicle. We made that deal with Mr. Engineer Kotb Soliman at Automobile & Touring Club of Egypt. His GSM number is 0020122117530 . With that price the guide would have been with us 10 days, but we needed only 4. But this option IS NOT for GERMANS, it´s the germans who are to blame for all this carnet hassle, that´s what Mr. Soliman told us. Algerian guide thing goes also for germans...
By the way, the other vehicle of our group made Finland to Cape Town in 33 days, Cairo to Cape Town in 23 days! I ended the trip in Dar Es Salaam, sold the LC and flew home.

I've done Aswan to Nuweiba in 2 days - without a carnet and without a guide, I just followed the road signs.

OK when you come from Jordan or Sudan but do you think it's the same thing if you try to enter in Egypt cmin' from Lybia ?
If so , it will be very intersting for many of us !

I think it´s possible, the guide who was with us told us that he had also been to Libyan border. Just call Mr. Soliman and ask, he speaks very good english. He doesn´t always answer the phone, just be persistent and try so many times that he does.

Mr. Soliman told us that those very high deposits for the carnet for Egypt and the fact that for example Automobile and Touring Club of Finland don´t issue carnet for Egypt at all, is because in the past Germans had been selling their vehicles illegally in Egypt.
In Algeria it was a german group who stole and tried to smuggle out of the country some historical objects.

But this happened longtime after the Algerians installed travelling in Algeria only with tour-operators or in convoy.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
