France to Gambia
Hello everyone,
after looking at different forums I was wondering if anyone has advise on whether or not a guide through the western sahara and Mauritanie is neseccary and if so where to get one?
Were are planning to drive through Marrocco, the alantic route, down through western sahara and futher on through mauritanie, senegal and gambia.
Second question, I read that a carnet de passage is not nesseccary, is this still so?
Third question. Should it be a problem to sell a decent peugeot 405 petrol 5 speed manual in gambia?
Anyone want to drive together trough mauritanie were going at the at of december? We are three students (one a bit fat though)
Cioa,
Vincent

Hello Vincent,
Guide - not necessary in Mk or Mori - it is 99.95% tarmac
CdP - as I understand it lately at Rosso they make you buy an expensive laisser passer (local/regional temp vehicle import permit) even if you have CdP.
You will have to bargain long and hard to get LP at a normal price.
Sell car - dont know but someone will.

Thank you for your quick reply.
I read a bit more about Mauritanië and was wondering what is the safest way to make it through to Senegal. Should we spend one day in Nouadhibou and then drive the next day to Nouakchott. I don't think it is managable from Dakhla in one day.
Second question, where to get a guide or to meet up with others to drive together through Mauritanië
If anyone knows it would be greatly appreciated.

Your plan Dak, NDB, NKT sounds good.
Although it's not possible to plan for it in advance, meeting other travellers on the road is easy as they are all going the same way as you.
Or wait in Dak or NDB a few days.
I would not worry at all about the easy road to NKT; Rosso border is where you may need strong nerves.

meeting other travellers close to the border Mar-Maur.
We're (2 belgian guys) staying for the moment in Tan Tan with our Pajero Jeep. We're heading in a few days south.
About meeting others: camping Dakhla or Nouadibou. Isn't there a camping &/or motel next to the border where we could meet up with other travellers?
Lot of travellers don't stop any more in Dakhla I thought?

You are right about Dakhla, Luc.
The roadhouse complex you are thinking of is Barbas ~150km south of Dakhla junction and 90 from the border.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
