Fuel stations
Hi,
This is the first time to visit this forum.
I come from Japan through Rusia,Ukraina,some Europian countries and now staying in Germany. Then next month, I am going to go africa, but I don't have any informations about Africa, so I have some questions.
I will take atlantic route from Morroco to Senegal.and I worry about fuel stations. My motorcycle is Africa Twin, so I can ride about 370km full of fuel tank, but if there is a only a few fuel stations, I have to get extra fuel tank.Anyone have experiance through this route, please let me know.

I am suprised no one has repied, I only have experience from my 2006 trip. No problem with fuel until you get to the Nouadhibou-Nouakchott(Mauritania) section when 300miles (500kms) had to be covered without fuel. I believe I read somewhere fuel was now available on this road, but check it out. Any recent advice anyone?

I just came back from Mauritania and published the first travel guide Mauritania in German. I guess your bike needs Super?
Half way between Nouadhibou and Nouakchott there is a new gas station, very modern, you should get super there. I hope you don't need unleaded, because there is no unleaded south of Tarfaya, Morocco.
If you need gas outside from gas stations there are many possibilities to get if from a barrel. This new asphalt road is now with much trafic and tents along the road, where you get something to eat, a bed and gas.

As Edith noted...
Unleaded and Super are your worries...
The route between NDB and NCK in Mauri is the trouble area....and just becuase that new gas station exists, DON'T count on it having petrol...carry enough with you to get to NCK and you should be ok...tie a couple 4 litre jeri cans to your rear passenger footpegs and panniers and you should have enough.

I did this route in Dec 2006 and it was cake...perfect tarmac...but watch out for the sand blowing over the tarmac in some spots. Theres also a nice route along the beach if you fancy a drive with a view...but its Mauritania...so don't expect the Riviera....

Black market for Essence is availabel even in gas stations...just try to be strong, lerarn some words nad numbers in arabic and smile.....Prioces will low down at least nnear tarmak...NEVER GIVE THE IMPRESSION OF BEEIN IN HURRY AND DESPERATE..preces can vary from 350 to 500 ougui in RIM 8from 1 to 2 euros)...get a gerrycan now!

well... hes on an africa twin so he definitely wont need unleaded. been on the same route in july and theres absolutely no problem with fuel. the only trouble spot is stii the stretch NDB to NKT but i recon that you have a VERY good chance of find super at the new station halfway between the 2 cities (they also have an excellent restaurant). i would still definitely take the jerrycans though, besides with the range you cover you only need to bring about 7 or 8 liters of extra fuel. the total is 470 km....

often i keep a nominal 5 liters can in a pannier. when space is at a premium a two liter ex oil can.. But for your expedition i would suggest you take a couple plastic oil contatiners, empty, then fill them for the crucial part. after give them away, someone will have a use for them.

In January I managed to get unleaded somewhere between NDB and NKT, but others didnºt have such luck. Thereºs also a family on the left side of the road some 30-60kms south of Boulanoir that sells essence from oil barrels by the side of the road. Whereever you see empty barrels, just stop and enquire.

Donºt worry youºll make it. In a worst worst case scenary youºll run out of gas by the side of the road, youºll run out of water, you bake in the sun and youºll die. (no just kidding). Thereºs plenty of traffic and youºll never get to the point where you die. Someone will pick you and your bike up and take you to NKT.

About two people from south africa travelling up through africa on an africa twin. If you read through it they said once or twice they ran out of fuel but only because of certain problems, wrong turns, but that was still with an few litres extra in a jerrycan.

Just keep an eye on this forum as they are still out there and scroll through to page 5 as there are more posts on it than just page one.

It seems I dont need worry about fuel stations. But for sumething happen. I will get extra jerrycan anywhere... Thank you for kind replies!
