Info on Mauritanian political situation
Hi,
Does anyone knows how's Mauritania's political situation these days, with the attempted "coup" and all?
Any info will be apreciated, as me and some friends are planning a trip there in September.
Thanks and regards,
NCR

hi
check www.fco.gov.uk
country advice
Me and some friend got the following answer:
"Dear Sirs,
The Honorary Consul thinks that Mauritania is perfectly safe, and
advises you go ahead with your travel plans. The only problem for you
will be the heat.
However, do keep an eye on the FCO official site, and if the travel
restriction is not lifted by August, write to me again and I'll give you
fresh information.
The attempted coup was a very limited affair, and Nouakchott is back to
its normal laid-back self.
Have a pleasant trip
Best regards,
Nancy Abeiderrahmane"
Abraços,
Renato Braz

I've spent the last few days in Mauritania and I'm now in Noukachott. It's completely safe. You would have no idea there had been an attempted coup if you didn't already know. Certainly don't change your plans unless anything changes between now and then.
The only thing is that there are lots of police checkpoints on the roads (apparently more than usual) and somebody told me this is because the police are looking for several men in connection with the coup. Similarly on the way into Noukachott the bush taxi I was in was searched very extensively with all seats being taken up, apparently looking for weapons. I also had to empty my backpack on the side of the road for a police officer to look in, but there was nothing particularly threatening about it.
Have a good one.
