Hey Steven,
in Wadi Halfa you can get assistance from Magdi Ahmed is cheaper then Kemal and more effective. Generally you need of course the int. driving license but nobody asked for that until now. More important is to have a carnet de passage for the bikes valid for Egypt (very important). The bikes you can put into the ferryboat leaving normally every Wensday from Halfa reaching Thursdays. (sometimes their is a delay of 1 day depending on the train coming from Sudan).
Due to Problems (upto date May 2004) their is a problem with the Egyptian paperwork in Aswan and it will take you up till Sunday until everything will be finished. That should be changed I can inform you about the upto date information when you are travelling. We had a promise from the official Egyptian site that it is yust a matter of time until that problem will be solved than it will take only few hours like it used to be.
The fees are not so very expensive for a bike should be depending on the cc of the bike. At the costums like anywhere else in Egypt you should take care as people will always try to charge you extra fees. The euros is about 7 LE (Egyptian Pounds) 2 years ago it was around 4 LE.
In Egypt you do not need a guide. But leaving Aswan you can only go in Escorte, where you should register atleast 1 day before.
Getting a visa for Libya in Egypt will not be easy (It was done before). The problem is that you are travelling alone. Normally you need an invitation for Libya (takes 3-4 weeks) Than you should be a group of atleast 4 persons. IN Libya you need a guide. To get a visa takes you 4-6 weeks and is costy. Their are alot of rumors that Libya will change some of those regulations. And several agencies in Libya are working with different tricks, so you will hear here atleast 100 different stories. (Hardly anyone is looking behind the screen).
So if you are stil planing on your tour and would need any assistance in any place in and around Egypt, you are most welcome to contact us at any time
we wish you a nice travel
