Insurance

We're planning a 3-week drive around Morocco in our Land Rover in November. We're having some trouble finding travel insurance -- our usual insurers say it's 'too hazardous'! This is depite the fact they were happy to cover us to drive a hired Land Rover around Southern Africa.

Can anyone recommend a specialist insurance broker? Searches on Google offer thousands of hits but none of the policies, when examined in detail, come up with the goods.

Thanks very much.

Hi, you don't way where you are from, but most continental european insurances cover Morocco automatically.

Otherwise, you can buy insurance there.

Life is a lot easier if you don't need/want comprehensive cover...

Sam.

Just to check - when you mean travel insurance you are talking about personal non vehicle related insurance

I use these guys for a yearly worldwide policy and they've never had any isues wih overland travel with or without vehicle

http://www.travelinsurers.com

They have also been good when i've had to claim (stolen backpack in south africa and stolen pannier in spain)

Yes, it's insurance for us rather than the vehicle, which is fully covered.

I'll give the people you suggest a try -- thanks very much for your help.

As I neglected to say in my original post, we're from the UK. Seems strange to me that we could get cover for Faliraki with no questions asked...!

As a climber I always use BMC (British Mountaineering Council) insurance.I m currently traveling and plan to be in Africa for six months. You have to be a member of the BMC but can join with your application for the insurance. The best thing is they are used to dealing with people going to out of the way places and doing supposedly risky things. I ve been assured on the phone that their fifty thousand pound rescue cover would apply in the sahara (not for the land rover though!!) I hope I never have to find out.
All the information is available on the BMC website, I havent got the right address at the moment but it would be easy to find.

Good luck Mal

I've used American Express for years - they give good rates especially if you're a cardholder.

I have the top one. I think my medical and evacuation insurance is 1m+ USD!

Get me a helicopter! And one for the Rover!

Nick.

I'm from the UK and am taking the bike down to Morocco next week for three weeks. I got my travel insurance through STA. For 30 days cover on their 'premier' policy, which specifically includes motorcycle touring, the premium was £47. You'll have to check on Land Rovers, but if they cover bikes I'd be surprised if they didn't cover 4WD.

I've used them before and when I crashed in Cambodia and broke my arm they were great. They paid up quickly and their call centre staff are helpful and not complete mumpties - which is a bonus!

Happy travels

For travel insurance I can recomend Harrison Beaumont Insurance Service Ltd.
2 Des Roches Square, Witney. Oxfordshire.
Ox28 4LG. TEL. 0870 1217590
They specialise in adventure travel and their cover even includes 'search and rescue'.I used them for my trip to Libya and their only stipulation was that I leave details of my planned route with the British embassy in Tripoli

I've always had good use of Europeiska, which also have a sister company in the UK:

Just remember: if they ask if you're with an expedition/rallye/event, say no!

Here in Sweden, all home insurers include Morocco by default, there's no need for anything more than that.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
